< January: Secular Humanism

february: Human Rights

The goal of this seminar is to give students clear ideas about rights, their origins and their limitations. We explore how one’s ideas about rights are rooted in one’s world view. Specifically, the view that man is created with a specified end proposes that man also has rights to those things that are necessary to achieve that end.

Questions covered in class

  • What are human rights and what are their foundations?

  • Is society’s sole purpose to allow people to pursue their own plans?

  • Are the demands of society at odds with the individual’s goals?
