May: In the Light of Disaster: Heart
Main Points of Class
Men who have a heart that is fully alive feel part of things that are bigger than themselves: their families, their country, and their world.
A good life is one in which we are fulfilled not only as individuals, but also fulfilled as members of a family, of our country, and of our society.
The classic disciplines of psychology, economy, and politics teach us about the good life of the individual, the family, and the nation. They have an order of importance: the common good is greater than the individual good.
We need to struggle against individualism, which limits us to our own concerns.
In heroic responses to disaster – such as those of the firefighters who gave their lives on 9/11 – we see love by which people transcend themselves to protect their families and country.
