November 2023: THE WORLD OF CYBERSECURITY

Main Speaker - James B. O’Kane

  • Mr. O'Kane gave an overview of the range of cyber crimes, from cheating on online gaming to ransomware attacks and the dark web. He spoke about the many aspects of criminology - legal, economic, social, computer engineering - that correspond to many ways of entering the field of cybersecurity. There were many great questions about his career path, his day to day at Unit 221B and some particulars of the world of cyber-defense.

Activity and Discussion: Prudence

  • We read "The Storyteller," a short story by H. H. Munro (Saki), and discussed the central questions posed by it. Are good intentions enough to be prudent? How can a "good message" be detached from reality? How does one grow in right judgement? What is the role of stories in learning to be good?

  • Prudence is about action and sometimes entails taking risks.

  • We need to learn to make decisions based on knowledge and trustworthy advice. Fostering a habit of reflection is essential to acting with prudence.

Out-of-class work

  • Discuss and complete mentor worksheet.
